HMX2 Gene Summary [Human]

The protein encoded by this gene is a member of the NKL homeobox family of transcription factors. Members in this family are of ancient origin and play an important role in organ development during embryogenesis. A related mouse protein plays a role in patterning of inner ear structures. In humans, variations in a region containing this gene have been associated with inner ear malformations, vestibular dysfunction, and hearing loss. [provided by RefSeq, Aug 2012]

Protein Domains

A protein domain is a distinct structural or functional region within a protein that can evolve, function, and exist independently of the rest of the protein chain. These domains in human HMX2 often fold into stable, three-dimensional structures and are associated with specific biological functions, such as binding to DNA, other proteins, or small molecules.
  • RNA polymerase II transcription factor activity, sequence-specific DNA binding
  • transcription regulator
  • double-stranded DNA binding
  • sequence-specific DNA binding
  • homeodomain
