Grm8 Gene Summary [Rat]

Enables group III metabotropic glutamate receptor activity. Involved in detection of mechanical stimulus involved in sensory perception of pain; glutamatergic synaptic transmission; and modulation of chemical synaptic transmission. Located in neuronal cell body and presynaptic membrane. Is active in GABA-ergic synapse; glutamatergic synapse; and presynaptic active zone membrane. Used to study Parkinsonism and epilepsy. Human ortholog(s) of this gene implicated in alcohol dependence; attention deficit hyperactivity disorder; autistic disorder; and schizophrenia. Orthologous to human GRM8 (glutamate metabotropic receptor 8). [provided by Alliance of Genome Resources, Jul 2025]

Protein Domains

A protein domain is a distinct structural or functional region within a protein that can evolve, function, and exist independently of the rest of the protein chain. These domains in rat Grm8 often fold into stable, three-dimensional structures and are associated with specific biological functions, such as binding to DNA, other proteins, or small molecules.
