Cyp2e1 Gene Summary [Rat]

Enables Hsp70 protein binding activity and Hsp90 protein binding activity. Involved in several processes, including response to 3-methylcholanthrene; response to ethanol; and response to ozone. Located in Golgi membrane; endoplasmic reticulum membrane; and mitochondrial inner membrane. Used to study alcohol dependence and drug-induced hepatitis. Biomarker of several diseases, including alcohol use disorder; liver disease (multiple); middle cerebral artery infarction; obesity; and type 2 diabetes mellitus. Human ortholog(s) of this gene implicated in acoustic neuroma; gastrointestinal system cancer (multiple); high grade glioma; liver disease (multiple); and lung disease (multiple). Orthologous to human CYP2E1 (cytochrome P450 family 2 subfamily E member 1). [provided by Alliance of Genome Resources, Jul 2025]

Protein Domains

A protein domain is a distinct structural or functional region within a protein that can evolve, function, and exist independently of the rest of the protein chain. These domains in rat Cyp2e1 often fold into stable, three-dimensional structures and are associated with specific biological functions, such as binding to DNA, other proteins, or small molecules.
