Mmp21 Gene Summary [Mouse]

This gene encodes a member of the matrix metalloproteinase family of extracellular matrix-degrading enzymes that are involved in tissue remodeling, wound repair, progression of atherosclerosis and tumor invasion. Mice harboring certain mutations in this gene exhibit congenital heart defects. Alternative splicing results in multiple transcript variants encoding different isoforms. Protein Domains

A protein domain is a distinct structural or functional region within a protein that can evolve, function, and exist independently of the rest of the protein chain. These domains in mouse Mmp21 often fold into stable, three-dimensional structures and are associated with specific biological functions, such as binding to DNA, other proteins, or small molecules.

  • Hemopexin-like repeats
  • Matrixin
  • ZnMc
  • peptidase
  • HX
  • Zinc-dependent metalloprotease
