SLC22A16 Gene Summary [Human]

This gene encodes a member of the organic zwitterion transporter protein family which transports carnitine. The encoded protein has also been shown to transport anticancer drugs like bleomycin (PMID: 20037140) successful treatment has been correlated with the level of activity of this transporter in tumor cells. Protein Domains

A protein domain is a distinct structural or functional region within a protein that can evolve, function, and exist independently of the rest of the protein chain. These domains in human SLC22A16 often fold into stable, three-dimensional structures and are associated with specific biological functions, such as binding to DNA, other proteins, or small molecules.
