Gabra6 Gene Summary [Rat]

Enables diazepam binding activity; heterocyclic compound binding activity; and inhibitory extracellular ligand-gated monoatomic ion channel activity. Contributes to GABA-A receptor activity; GABA-gated chloride ion channel activity; and benzodiazepine receptor activity. Involved in GABAergic synaptic transmission and response to ethanol. Located in dendrite; neuronal cell body membrane; and synaptic membrane. Part of receptor complex. Is active in several cellular components, including cerebellar Golgi cell to granule cell synapse; hippocampal mossy fiber to CA3 synapse; and postsynaptic specialization membrane. Used to study obesity. Orthologous to human GABRA6 (gamma-aminobutyric acid type A receptor subunit alpha6). [provided by Alliance of Genome Resources, Jul 2025]

Protein Domains

A protein domain is a distinct structural or functional region within a protein that can evolve, function, and exist independently of the rest of the protein chain. These domains in rat Gabra6 often fold into stable, three-dimensional structures and are associated with specific biological functions, such as binding to DNA, other proteins, or small molecules.
