HOXC9 Gene Summary [Human]

This gene belongs to the homeobox family of genes. The homeobox genes encode a highly conserved family of transcription factors that play an important role in morphogenesis in all multicellular organisms. Mammals possess four similar homeobox gene clusters, HOXA, HOXB, HOXC and HOXD, which are located on different chromosomes and consist of 9 to 11 genes arranged in tandem. This gene is one of several homeobox HOXC genes located in a cluster on chromosome 12. [provided by RefSeq, Jul 2008]

Protein Domains

A protein domain is a distinct structural or functional region within a protein that can evolve, function, and exist independently of the rest of the protein chain. These domains in human HOXC9 often fold into stable, three-dimensional structures and are associated with specific biological functions, such as binding to DNA, other proteins, or small molecules.
  • RNA polymerase II transcription factor activity, sequence-specific DNA binding
  • transcription regulator
  • double-stranded DNA binding
  • Hox9 activation region
  • protein binding
  • Hox hexapeptide motif
  • sequence-specific DNA binding
  • homeodomain
