Rps6 Gene Summary [Rat]

Enables mRNA binding activity. A structural constituent of ribosome. Involved in several processes, including cellular response to ethanol; negative regulation of bicellular tight junction assembly; and ribosomal small subunit assembly. Part of cytosolic small ribosomal subunit. Is active in GABA-ergic synapse; presynapse; and ribosome. Used to study transient cerebral ischemia. Biomarker of vascular dementia. Orthologous to human RPS6 (ribosomal protein S6). [provided by Alliance of Genome Resources, Jul 2025]

Protein Domains

A protein domain is a distinct structural or functional region within a protein that can evolve, function, and exist independently of the rest of the protein chain. These domains in rat Rps6 often fold into stable, three-dimensional structures and are associated with specific biological functions, such as binding to DNA, other proteins, or small molecules.
