Apoa2 Gene Summary [Mouse]

This gene encodes a component of high density lipoproteins (HDL). Mice lacking the encoded protein have low HDL-cholesterol levels, smaller HDL particles, increased clearance of triglyceride-rich lipoproteins and insulin hypersensitivity. Transgenic mice overexpressing the encoded protein have elevated levels of HDL-cholesterol and show increased susceptibility to atherosclerosis. Alternative splicing of this gene results in multiple variants. [provided by RefSeq, Mar 2015]

Protein Domains

A protein domain is a distinct structural or functional region within a protein that can evolve, function, and exist independently of the rest of the protein chain. These domains in mouse Apoa2 often fold into stable, three-dimensional structures and are associated with specific biological functions, such as binding to DNA, other proteins, or small molecules.
