Meis3 Gene Summary [Mouse]

The protein encoding this gene belongs to the three amino acid loop extension family of homeodomain transcription factors, which play essential roles in many embryonic processes. These proteins are characterized by an atypical homeodomain containing a three amino acid loop extension between helices 1 and 2. Expression of this gene begins during the compaction stage of embryogenesis and continues into the blastocyst stage. This gene is also expressed in pancreatic islet cells and beta-cells and regulates beta-cell survival. Alternative splicing results in multiple transcript variants. [provided by RefSeq, Nov 2014]

Protein Domains

A protein domain is a distinct structural or functional region within a protein that can evolve, function, and exist independently of the rest of the protein chain. These domains in mouse Meis3 often fold into stable, three-dimensional structures and are associated with specific biological functions, such as binding to DNA, other proteins, or small molecules.

  • RNA polymerase II transcription factor activity, sequence-specific DNA binding
  • transcription regulator
  • double-stranded DNA binding
  • chromatin binding
  • protein binding
  • sequence-specific DNA binding
  • N-terminal of Homeobox Meis and PKNOX1
  • homeodomain
