Involved in long-term memory; receptor internalization; and synapse assembly. Acts upstream of or within cellular response to ammonium ion; chemical synaptic transmission; and long-term synaptic depression. Located in several cellular components, including dendrite membrane; neuron spine; and perisynaptic space. Part of AMPA glutamate receptor complex. Is active in excitatory synapse; glutamatergic synapse; and synaptic membrane. Is expressed in several structures, including alimentary system; brain; cardiovascular system; genitourinary system; and sensory organ. Used to study schizoaffective disorder. Human ortholog(s) of this gene implicated in autosomal dominant intellectual developmental disorder 67; autosomal recessive intellectual developmental disorder 76; and epilepsy.
